September 28, 1930 Trooper Better was a member of the 22nd Recruit Training Troop, which graduated on February 3rd 1930. On September 28th, 1930, only seven months after graduation, Trooper Better was operating his motorcycle south on Rte. 1, the "Newburyport Turnpike" in the town of Danvers, when he was hit head on by an automobile traveling northbound. The operator of the auto told investigators that he had to swerve his car into the southbound lane because the vehicle ahead of him slowed suddenly. Trooper Better died from his injuries a short time later in Danvers State Hospital. |
