January 4, 1950 Trooper Hewitt was a member of the 31st Recruit Training Troop, graduating on June 16th, 1947. He was struck and killed on January 4th , 1950, while his partner was issuing a traffic violation. Trooper Hewitt was standing near his patrol car, when two trucks traveling South on the Newburyport Turnpike in Saugus collided; one of the trucks struck Trooper Hewitt, jamming him against the side of his cruiser. Witnesses stated the gravel truck sideswiped a light delivery truck, causing it to spin out of control and into the trooper, who was thrown 20 feet and died instantly. The two truck drivers were arrested for driving to endanger, the operator of the vehicle which struck and killed Trooper Hewitt was also charged with manslaughter. |
