October 21, 1960 Sergeant James H. Marshall, a member of the 31st Recruit Training Troop, graduated June 16th 1947. He spent most of his career assigned to sub-stations in Troop B. Finally, on October 21st, 1957, he obtained the rank of Sergeant and was able to transfer to the command of the Shelburne Falls Barracks and close to home. Three years later, to the very date of his promotion to sergeant, Sergeant Marshall was working the desk when two Officers from the Shelburne Falls P.D. brought in a youth that was" giving them trouble". After booking the youth, Sergeant Marshall began to move the subject to a cell, when he became unruly. Sergeant Marshall and the two Shelburne officers struggled with the youth; during the struggle, Sergeant Marshall collapsed. Other troopers in the barracks administered first aid and summonsed a local doctor. By the time the doctor arrived at the barracks, Sergeant Marshall was dead, the apparent victim of a heart attack. |
