April 23, 1953 Trooper Mathews was a member of the 36th Recruit Training Troop, graduating on February 7th, 1952. He was assigned to Troop B. On April 23, 1953, he was operating a State Police motorcycle, taking it to a garage for repairs in the town of Russell. On Rte. 20 in the town of Russell, he was struck head on by another vehicle. He died almost instantly. The day after his death, he was to be the best man in his brothers wedding. |
