October 1, 1927 Trooper Prentiss, a member of the 16th Recruit Training Troop, became the second State Police Officer killed in the line of duty. On the afternoon of October 1st, 1927, while on routine patrol on Rte. 8 in the town of Cheshire, Trooper Prentiss lost control of his motorcycle when, according to an eyewitness, the machine suddenly "took a pitch". He left the roadway and struck a telephone pole. The impact was so severe, it left an imprint of Trooper Prentiss’ hat badge on the pole itself. |
