March 30, 1934 Trooper Tobin was a member of 25th Recruit Training Troop and graduated on August 15th 1933. On March 30th, 1934, Trooper Tobin, assigned to the Wareham Barracks in Troop D, was dispatched at 1020 hours to investigate a motor vehicle accident in the town of Freetown. Just 1.4 miles North of the barracks, Trooper Tobin rounded a curve and lost control of his motorcycle, striking the rear of a truck that was headed South. The operator of the truck stated that he observed the trooper traveling towards him "dragging his right foot". This lent speculation that perhaps Trooper Tobin struck something, which caused him to lose control of the motorcycle before colliding with the truck. Trooper Tobin was transported to a local hospital where 11 members of Troop D responded to donate blood in an attempt to save his life. His injuries were too severe and he died later that evening. |
